Juvenile Law & Minors

A child who breaks the law in Texas may enter a complex world of procedures, places and people called the juvenile justice system. On your first telephone call to the office, you will speak to a staff member regarding specific information about the charge(s) against your child. If your child has been arrested we can help.

According to the laws of Texas children between the ages of 10 and 17 are subject to the jurisdiction of the juvenile courts. When a child in the age range commits an offense, that would generally be considered a criminal offense under the Penal Code, that child will enter the Juvenile Justice System. The Juvenile Justice System is a hybrid or quasi criminal system. Charges are made pursuant to the criminal and penal codes of Texas; however, the handling of a juvenile case is significantly different than an adult case and is governed by the Texas Family Code.

The juvenile system functions on a progressive sanction scale. This is a highly specialized are of the law and involvement with the juvenile system is often very stressful both for the child and family. It is highly recommended that when seeking an attorney to handle a juvenile matter for a loved one you find someone who has experience in this area of the law.

Our firm can offer you the necessary experience and guidance in this area of the law to help minimize the stress for both the child and the parents. Ms. Dunne was previously a juvenile prosecutor for the Galveston County District Attorney Office and is familiar with the law and practices of the Galveston County Juvenile Justice System.
